Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont -- paid puppet for the media industry, sponsored the controversial S.3325 bill, aka the "PRO IP" bill.
We've covered the bill in some detail already:-
- Stop the MPAA and RIAA shadow government: Oppose S. 3325
- Stop the RIAA from using the Department of Justice to do its dirty work
- Last Chance: Tell Bush to veto the RIAA/MPAA Enforcement Bill
Joe Biden loves the RIAA
Incumbent Vice President, Joe Biden's anti-privacy legislation was actually responsible for the creation of PGP.
Biden is a close ally of Hollywood and the recording industry -- the very industries that are in-bed with the DRM vendors like Apple, to ensure DRM continues on movies and TV shows, as the battle with music is largely won by the DRM-free services like Amazon and eMusic.
As CNET reports:
Biden also sponsored a bill in 2002 that would have make it a federal felony to trick certain types of devices into playing unauthorized music or executing unapproved computer programs. Biden's bill was backed by content companies including News Corp. but eventually died after Verizon, Microsoft, Apple, eBay, and Yahoo lobbied against it.
Later, he signed a letter advocating the prosecution of individuals who intentionally allow mass copying from their computer over peer-to-peer networks, and even as recently as last year, he sponsored an RIAA-backed bill aimed at restricting Americans' ability to record and play back individual songs from satellite and Internet radio services.
